Buttermilk is very well called as a Satvik (Nutritious) drink in Ayurveda. Buttermilk not only quenches thirst in dehydrating summer but also provides us with variety of nutrients due to the content present in it.

 

Buttermilk is made up of fresh curd, water, jeera powder and salt. Even pepper, coriander leaves, ginger, green chillies and curry leaves may be added to it. All these ingredients together with buttermilk have lots of health benefits.

Buttermilk provides us complete nutrition. It provides us good quality of proteins with all essential amino acids. Along with proteins, it is good source of calcium, b-complex vitamins especially riboflavin, Vitamin A, potassium and phosphorous. It is slowly absorbed from intestines and better utilized.

It is rich in calcium and contains about 280 mg to 340 mg depending upon fat content of milk. (USDA) Though the name “buttermilk” suggests that it is high in fat, it is actually not. Usually low fat buttermilk contains only 2 g of fat/cup and reduced fat buttermilk contains 5 g of fat/cup! Same as milk, it is a good source of riboflavin required to burn calories.

Buttermilk prevents dehydration. Ninety percent of buttermilk is water. It also has a cooling effect especially in summers. It not only quenches thirst but also has soothing effect.

Buttermilk has digestive properties due to which it widely consumed after heavy, spicy and oily meals. It soothes the gastric lining. Also when jeera powder and ginger is added it helps in reducing stomach irritation.

Buttermilk helps in reducing the gastric acid reflux. It decreases burning sensation and helps in reducing acidity when consumed regularly.

The Milk Fat Globule Membrane (MFGM) present in buttermilk has various health benefits. This bioactive compound has been shown to have anti cancer, anti viral, anti bacterial, anti hypertensive and cholesterol lowering effects in various studies. It has also shown to increase muscular strength and physical fitness when combined with exercise.

The Live organisms present in buttermilk act as probiotic which help to increase population of good bacteria in intestine. This helps to boost immunity. It also helps to prevent constipation as well as treat diarrhea.
